The Lighthouse of Alexandria took 12 years to build. Archaeologists will never Know exactly how long it took, as many different sources all say different things.
The range was 29 miles or 47 Kms
The main purpose for the lighthouse of Alexandria, also known as the Pharos, was to have been a lighthouse much like today's lighthouses' purpose - to guide ships safely to harbour. Alexandria was a busy harbour, with many trade ships coming in, and the Pharos enabled safe passage. Sailing in this coastal region was very dangerous, so it was built to help the sailors navigate their return to the Great Harbor. It was also both a practical and unique symbol of the 'glory' of the ancient city of Alexandria, which flourished under Ptolemy Soter.
Since the 13th century? None. That's when it was destroyed in an earthquake.

It is believed that, not only was the lighthouse at Alexandria the tallest lighthouse in the world for its time, but no lighthouse constructed since then has equalled it in height. It employed remarkable technology for the time, and stood for many centruies before being destroyed by a series of earthquakes.
There is no "Patronus tower". The Petronas twin towers in Kuala Lumpur are roughly 3,5 times taller than the lighthouse of Alexandria - roughly because the actual height of the latter is variously estimated between 120 and 140 meters (293 - 450 ft).

The first lighthouse of Egypt was the Pharos, of Alexandria. The height of the lighthouse of Alexandria was estimated to have been between 115 and 135 m, or 380 and 440 ft, as 10th century travellers reported it as being 300 cubits high. To give a comparison, a 40 storey modern building is about 134m in height.
Alexandria was an important trade centre, and a clearly visible lighthouse was necessary for the many ships entering the harbour. Also, it was a very wealthy city, and what better way to show off the wealth of a city than to construct a magnificent tower like the Pharos?
