The first lighthouse of Egypt was the Pharos, of Alexandria. The height of the lighthouse of Alexandria was estimated to have been between 115 and 135 m, or 380 and 440 ft, as 10th century travellers reported it as being 300 cubits high. To give a comparison, a 40 storey modern building is about 134m in height.

The Pharos lighthouse was also known as the Lighthouse of Alexandria. It was an impressive stone and marble structure situated on a stone foundation and believed to be between 450 and 600 feet high, or 300 cubits in ancient measurements. The Pharos was one of the wonders of the ancient world. The base of the Pharos was shaped like a huge box, up to 200 feet high and 100 feet square. Atop this was an octagonal tower, from which protruded a cylinder extending up to an open cupola. The actual light of the lighthouse was a fire that burned in this cupola.
