It is reasonable - if needed - to take the SAT twice. After the second time it really is not going to improve your score by that much. This is a supported fact by a number of studies.

EDIT: You can take the SAT as many times as you want. My scores (on the old 1600 test) went 1210, 1420, 1560, 1590, so I definitely benefited from taking it several times. It only starts to count against you when you look like you're obsessed with it--taking it like ten times or more--because some schools will start to think you're focusing on the wrong things. However, almost all state schools that have a more mathematical formula just look at your score, they don't care how many times you took it. Of course, the best way to find out is always to check your school's website or e-mail their admissions office;they'll tell you.

You can take the SAT as many times as you like. Many students take it more than once to improve their original score, or to achieve a greater composite score (when only your best scores for a section are counted). Bear in mind, however, that each SAT test costs $49, and taking it more than a few times is expensive.

If you retake the test and notice that your score hasn't improved, it may not be worth it to take the test a third time.

You should take the SAT prep test enough times to be prepared and informed, but not so many that you are stressed. Use the results from each practice test to study particular subject areas. For more information visit, http://www.higherstandards.biz/higher-standards-FAQ.html

What year do you have to be to take SAT?

You can take the SAT at anytime if you would just like to see what your score is like. If you are taking it for college admissions, then you should do it at the end of your junior year or during your senior year. If you think that you would like to take it twice, you should probably take it for the first time at the end of your junior year. You can check the testing schedule or register to take the SAT at collegeboard.com.
