The most destructive tornadoes usually occur in the United States of America, which has led to the misconception that they only occur there. But some very destructive and often deadly tornadoes have occurred in neighboring Canada and Mexico as well as in Brazil, Italy, France, Germany, Britain, Bangladesh, India, Australia and others.
It is impossible to tell. Since official record keeping from the U.S. began in 1950 it has had over 61,000 tornadoes and it is doubtless that thousands more went undocumented. Worldwide record keeping is even less complete. Given that over 1,000 tornadoes touch down in the U.S. alone every year the total number of tornadoes just in human history probably totals well into the millions.
