Presently, Vermont has 14 counties. It is conjured with 255 political units or "places." These poitical units include 237 towns, 9 cities, 5 unorganized towns, and 4 gores. The cities include: Burlington, Rutland, South Burlington, Barre, Montpelier, St. Albans, Winooski, Newport, and Vergennes. There originally were four counties but now there are 14 (probably a symbolic number from Vermont past, being the 14th state in the Union).
