Strictly speaking there are six horns in a brass band. * Flugel Horn (1) * Tenor Horn (3) * Baritone Horn (2) However, brass band players and conductors commonly refer to these instruments simply as "Flugel", "Horn" and "Baritone". In this context the number of horns is three (i.e. the three Tenor Horns).
It depends on what you mean by horn and by orchestra. In a symphony, sometimes there are as many as 5 or 6 french horns, however, even though "horn" normally refers to a french horn, the term is sometimes used to refer to other instruments besides just the french horn. The answer also depends on the what is being played. I used to play the Trumpet, also sometimes referred to as a horn, in a symphony in a small city, and some pieces used 2 trumpets, some 3, a few used 5 or 6, and a few used none, and the same goes for other instruments. The basic answer is, they use however many are needed for each specific piece.
It varies ... generally two or four in lots of cases. The composer will usually "call out" the number of instruments to be used on his/her work. Some discretion by the conductor is also possible.
It can vary depending on what the piece needs, but the standard is 2-5 horns, 2-4 trumpets, 2-3 trombones, and a tuba. Something like a Mozart piano concerto will only have 2 horns, while a Tchaikovsky symphony will have a full brass section.
The modern standard is 4, maybe 5 if there's an assistant principal. Some older music might only use 2. A handful of pieces actually call for 8. Whatever the number, horns are typically found in pairs.
