The three basic waveforms are Sine, Triangle and Square waves.

For transmitting, the only one that matters is the Sine wave because it has no harmonics of its own. A "harmonic" is an unwanted emanation running at an exact multiple of the frequency you're trying to use.

An infinite number of waveforms are possible depending on the application. Sine waves are prevalent in many applications, but even a sine wave can vary considerably as noise is imposed on the waveform. Other common waveforms are square waves and triangular shapes waveforms.
