It is difficult to determine an exact number as it varies by country and time period. However, in the United States, there are approximately 3.5 million veterans who served during peacetime. This includes veterans who served between conflicts and never saw combat.

yes It is not a Federal holiday. Many businesses will operate as usual, and not acknowledge it at all. As a Veteran, I feel that the day does not do what it was intended, to honor those Veterans who served their country during times of peace and war. The country as a whole seems to ignore it, while Veterans try to acknowledge each other.

The answer is complicated as it depends on many things, when & where the veteran served, service connected disabilities, current income (for needs based benefits), etc. The best resource to answer this is the VA or by contacting a veterans service organization such as The American Legion, Disabled American Veterans (DAV), or Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) , among others.
