The Persian Wars pitted the Persians against the mainland Greeks. Eventually, the Greeks won after defeating the Persians by land and sea in the Second Persian War. Later, the Macedonian Geeks, under Alexander the Great, invaded and conquered the Persian Empire.

It was the Battle of Thermopylae in the Second Persian War. The Greeks won. Shortly after Thermopylae the Athenian Navy defeated the Persian Navy at Salamis, and in the next year the Persian Army was defeated by a combined Greek Army at Plataea.

Other than the knowledge that they were the first people to successfully resist the might of the Persian Empire, Greece had no gains from the Second Persian War. The Greeks were the defenders here, and they defended their culture and autonomy.

First, bribing the Greek city-state aristocracy to side with them, and for those which didn't, an attempt at military suppression. The military strategy was to threaten the Greek city-states with naval attack, which made them keep their armies at home to protect their city. This was successful until the Greeks set about to destroy the Persian navy.
Parthenon was there in both the first [490 BCE] and the second [480 BCE] Persian Greek wars but was destroyed by the Persians when they entered the evacuated city of Athens just before the naval battle of Salamis where the Greeks won the Persian and Phoenician fleets.
