This is a really difficult question to answer because no-one really knows who first settled in the area, or exactly when. The White Tower, which is in the middle of the Tower of London, dates from 1078 so is one of the oldest buildings in London. The oldest structure is probably London Wall, which dates from the Roman times, and parts of it are still standing, notably adjacent to the Tower of London.
The Raven: It is not known when the ravens first came to the Tower of London, but their presence there is surrounded by myth and legend. Unusually for birds of ill omen, the future of both Country and Kingdom relies upon their continued residence, for according to legend, at least six ravens must remain lest both Tower and Monarchy fall.

The Tower of London has been used as a prision for many years as well as a treasury of the crown jewels. It had some damage from World War II German bombs. The only attack came from the terrorists, possibly the Irish Republican Army, in 1974 when bombs killed one and injured 41.
The Great Exhibition at the Crystal Palace of 1851 in London was conceived to symbolize this industrial, military and economic superiority of Great Britain. Over 13,000 exhibits were displayed and viewed by over 6,200,000 visitors to the exhibition. Around 30 million people a year visit London. The number of foreign visitors was 15.2 million in 2006 (the majority being other Europeans). Although the number of British visitors to London is impossible to calculate, it is thought that around 15 million non-London Brits spend at least one night in London a year.
