Mainland greece, its really, just mainland Greece which has Athens within it... then you has the Peloponnese where Sparta and Olympia are and Crete, and the islands and just other regions such as Thrace, etc.

The most southerly point on the European mainland is Punto Tarifa in Spain. The islands of Malta and Cyprus appear to be further south! Great answer :-) I must add, Spain is the most southern European country by both mainland (Punta de Tarifa) and Islands (Canary Islands). Portugal is further south than Greece because of the Madeira region.
