Eric the Red, the Norse explorer, is known for being the father of Leif Erikson, who is credited with discovering Greenland and parts of North America. Eric the Red's most notable action regarding his son was encouraging him to explore and settle new lands, which ultimately led to Leif's voyages to Vinland. Eric's own exile from Norway and subsequent settlement of Greenland set the stage for Leif's explorations. Additionally, Eric's legacy is intertwined with Leif's achievements in exploration, making their relationship significant in Viking history.
Eric the Red's voyages were undertaken as he continuously found himself exiled or banned from the places he lived for killing neighbours and people he disagreed with. With each successive exile he moved further west until he discovered Greenland.
