gold plated jewelry doesn't last long you will see fading in the color (sometimes changing black) & gold doesn't change colors .
9ct gold will have a '375' or '9ct' or '9kt' stamped onto it somewhere, gold plated gold won't have this.
Well, the difference between gold and gold overlay, is that the gold 24k it is pure yellow gold metal; and yellow gold alloys it is 22k thru 10k Rhodium Plated. But is not white gold plated. Because it is yellow gold alloy's include copper, and Rhodium plated. That it is gold overlay.
Rub it, if you can smell tarnish its not solid gold because gold doesn't rust. Its probably what it's plated to!
bag it agenst your teeth
If you do NT believe in markngs, you shall have to scratch it (better on the back side)

Keep chasing gold golems and eventually you will find the gold-plated golem. There's no way to tell by looking at it which one is the gold-plated golem though.

1. Gold is denser than brass: weigh the object, and determine its volume (e.g. by measuring the displacement when it is sunk into water in a graduated cylinder). Calculate the density. Gold will come out near 19.4 grams/cubic centimetre; brass near 8.6 g/cm3. 2. Rub against the unglazed ceramic object, real gold leave gold streak brass plated will leave brass streak.

I have a pair of vintage earrings, they look like sterling silver, but the mark is Mexico 575 and 9d. Can you tell me what they are....silver or gold? Thank You.
Gold is much heavier then brass
By the color, obviously. NIckel plated flutes are slightly golden and well, silver plated, they have silver color.
Any reputable coin dealer will tell you that gold plated coins are worthless to a collector and they are damaged. However, often gold plated coins are sold (often deceptively) to buyers via TV or internet marketing. There are only a handful of gold plated coins created by legitimate government mints that are collectible (this is the same for "colorized" coins) but the US mint has not made any of them. A gold plated US coin is damaged and generally only worth face value (or silver scrap value in the case of older coins).
