Bishop Spong is telling us that there were really no wise men, so from a historical point of view, that is the answer. But if you are planning a nativity scene, the usual number is three wise men.
There is no mention of how many wise men there were. Apparently since there were three gifts mentioned, people have assumed there were three wise men, but we don't know.
