over ten thoussand, many girls feel that they are fat and need to be skinnier but they are fine as they are
Roughly 1 in every 250 American suffers from anorexia. The three main types of eating disorders are anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge-eating disorder. In their lifetime, an estimated 0.6 percent of the adult population in the U.S. will suffer from anorexia, 1.0 percent from bulimia, and 2.8 percent from a binge eating disorder. 14 Women are much more likely than males to develop an eating disorder. They are three times as likely to experience anorexia (0.9 percent of women vs. 0.3 percent of men) and bulimia (1.5 percent of women vs. 0.5 percent of men) during their life. They are also 75 percent more likely to have a binge eating disorder (3.5 percent of women vs. 2.0 percent of men).14 The mortality rate among people with anorexia has been estimated at 0.56 percent per year, or approximately 5.6 percent per decade, which is about 12 times higher than the annual death rate due to all causes of death among females ages 15-24 in the general population.
About 1 in every 250 people is predicted to suffer from anorexia.
i don't think anyone has actually ever researched this, but, many girls (and men) develop eating disorders because they think they are not beautiful, over weight, an outcast in some cases.. Eating disorders, like anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and binge eating, are becoming increasingly prevalent throughout western countries. According to US estimates from The National Institute of Mental Health, between 5 per cent and 10 per cent of girls and women (i.e. 5-10 million people) and 1 million boys and men suffer from eating disorders, including anorexia, bulimia, binge eating disorder, or other associated dietary conditions. Estimates suggest that as many as 15 percent of young women adopt unhealthy attitudes and behaviors about food.
I have heard about 1% of the total population.
An estimated 1 million men.
1 out of every 250 people has anorexia. (girls to boys is 9 : 1) In the US, that is about 8 million people.
Roughly 1 in every 200 people in the United States has anorexia. The estimated population of the US (July 2008) was just over 300 million. So that's about 1.5 million people or so who have at least some form of anorexia.
The US has some of the largest incidences of anorexia and other eating disorders. This is speculated to be because of the focus of mass-media culture, as well as the fact that the US is almost entirely a developed country (anorexia is rarely seen in developing and third world countries because people in poverty often do not choose not to eat, they are more often too poor to afford food to survive in the first place). The US also does not have a centralized health care system like many European nations do, meaning that people do not have insurance often. Many insurance companies will not pay for medical treatment or full treatment (they issue early discharge), so anorexics cannot recieve the proper care that they need to recover.
Socially, anorexia is greatly harming our society. It is a little nagging bug on the back of society that shows us how destructive we (and the ideals) are becoming. For a perosn suffereing from anorexia, social problems can happen like isolation and depression, too.
Not really, no.
There are 8 million peopole in the US with EDs. 1 in 10 Anorectics (that is the correct term for a person with Anorexia) will die from Anorexia. I am unsure of the total amount of deaths.
here are some of the more reliable stats i have found * It is estimated that 8 million Americans have an eating disorder - seven million women and one million men * One in 200 American women suffers from anorexia * Two to three in 100 American women suffers from bulimia * Nearly half of all Americans personally know someone with an eating disorder (Note: One in five Americans suffers from mental illnesses.) * An estimated 10 - 15% of people with anorexia or bulimia are males
