As with any language word fall into disuse and are removed or turned archaic the same way new words are formed and created with the changing communities. French, being such a wide spread language probably adds words more frequently than others. Anyway the estimation can never be known for sure All languages that have some sort of technical language such as medical terms and scientific elements (not to mention species) will most likely add about 250,000 plus words just form those terms. If you want to count every spices of animal as a separate word (if you were particular) than every language would range far beyond the millions... and that doesn't include plants and other names. But since we normally only include words of practical use other than proper names of scientific nature, I would cut that 500k down by more than half to represent a close estimate as to how many words are in the language. So 220,000 might be more realistic.
But we can never really know since more form frequently. For example English some say it has 1 million words (Since it incorporates words from many different languages and makes it bigger than most... or all no one knows for sure.) Others say only about 400,000. But regardless of word count. how many of those words are slang, or archaic, or scientific reference? So no one knows for sure.
