1886 to 1894
Eight years
About six years.
Construction on Tower Bridge in London began in 1886 and it was completed in 1894. Tower Bridge in Sacramento was finished in 1935.
It is thought that the Romans were the first to build a bridge over the river Thames hover the first bridge that is on record is the London bridge which was first started in 1176 and was not finished until years later.
London Bridge is a very ordinary bridge which crosses the river Thames in London. The first bridge across the river was built by the Romans about 2000 years ago and there has been a bridge on the site ever since. At one time there were shops and houses on the bridge, which eventually collapsed - hence the children's song 'London Bridge is Falling Down'. Many foreigners mistakenly think that Tower Bridge - the next bridge downstream and much more interesting - is London Bridge.
This depends on which London Bridge is meant. There were various wooden and stone bridges that preceded the current London Bridge. The original London Bridge, which featured an intricate complex of houses, shops and a chapel, 19 small arches and a drawbridge with a gatehouse at each end, took 33 years to construct (1176-1209). This was replaced by a new bridge which took six years to build (1825-1831). Construction of the most recent London Bridge was begun in 1967 before the previous bridge was removed (and which now resides in Arizona), so took around five years to build, being completed in 1972.
Because the original bridge was the ONLY bridge in London at that time.
While it has no other official name, the modern London Bridge is the latest of several bridges to have held the name since the Roman founding of the city. The current steel-and-concrete bridge was opened in 1973, replacing one built of stone that had stood in its place since 1831; this, in turn, had replaced a another stone bridge that had stood thirty metres upstream of the current location for six hundred years. Many before that had been constructed in various ways from wood, and in various ways also destroyed. It is not to be confused with Tower Bridge, which straddles the Thames further downstream, next to the Tower of London.
Tower Bridge was completed in 1894
Tower bridge was, and still is, an important landmark. When the bridge was opened in 1894, it was the largest bridge of its kind and a sorely needed River Crossing for vehicles in the area. Due to the controversy of the bridge's design and construction, Tower Bridge bought sightseers from all around to view the "absurd" bridge that represented "the vice and tawdriness and prentiousness" according to critics. Throughout the years since, Tower Bridge has continued to serve as not only a convenient way to cross the Thames (with 40,000 people crossing each day), but also as a popular tourist attraction. The bridge is considered to be a symbol of London, featuring heavily in many London based TV shows and Movies.
The current London Bridge is made of pre-stressed concrete.
No, it isn't. A beam bridge is a beam supported at each end. If you need to cross a ditch one way is to simply span it with a one inch board, then walk across. This is a simple beam bridge. Tower bridge is a bascule bridge. A beam bridge wouldn't do here because the bridge is located downstream of the Pool of London and London docks. Very large ships needed access to this dock area which meant good width and a high overhead clearance. Tower bridge has a tower at each end, with the towers connected to each other by a gantry close to their tops. The roadway, which is not very high above the river, is in two pieces. Each piece is hinged at the tower end, and can be raised to an almost vertical position. When a large ship needs to pass through the bridge, the two bascules are raised, then lowered again as soon as the ship is through. The name Tower bridge has nothing to do with the towers at either end. The bridge is located very close to the Tower of London, a fortress that was put there about 700 years previously.
