The plans to build three large ocean liners--The Olympic, The Titanic, and the Britannic (originally the Gigantic)--were conceived in 1907. Construction began on the Titanic in 1909 in Belfast, Ireland. The hull was finished and launched May 31st, 1911. It would take another 11 months before it was officially completed and ready to sail. The entire process took about five years, and the actual building took around three.
