40 years
The bible says they were in the desert for 40 long years.
The number 40 in the Bible means a period of trial or tribulation, the Israelites had to wander the desert for 40 years. They were often hungry and thirsty. Since the Israelites had been imprisoned under Egyptian rule, many still worshipped pagan religions, and so they had to be taught about God.
According to the Old Testament, the Israelites (the ancestors of today's Jews) wandered the wilderness (often mistranslated as desert) for 40 years. There is currently no archaeological evidence to support the claim that this event actually happened historically (see also the attached Related Link.).

In The Bible, the Israelites wandered for forty years before they entered Canaan. In history, on the other hand, there was no Exodus from Egypt and no militiary conquest of Canaan as described in the Bible. The Israelites did not travel from Egypt to Canaan.
Moses and the Israelites wandered in the desert for 40 years, covering a distance of approximately 1,000 miles. While exact calculations of the area they wandered are difficult, estimates suggest that they traversed roughly 2,500 square miles in the Sinai Peninsula region. This figure can vary based on interpretations of their routes and specific locations. However, the focus is more on the journey's significance than on precise measurements.
