High School in Japan is three years. Kids in the first HS grade (ichi (1) nen (year) sei (student) ) are the equivalent of 10th graders in the United States. There is the extra year at the elementary school level which creates this. In the US elementary is over at 5th grade however in Japan it goes to 6th. Hope this helps.
