By law, Obama can only serve two terms as president which means he can only serve for 8 years. This means his time is up in 2016.
A US president may serve up to two terms of four years each, for a total maximum of 8 years in office.
Answer: For all states except New Hampshire and Vermont, a governor can serve up to eight years, or two consecutive terms. However, a two term governor can wait 8 years and run again. In New Hampshire and Vermont, the length of terms is 2 years.
I heard that you can do up to 10 years; but im actually sure.
Under the term limits voted in as an amendment to the Michigan State Constitution, senators, representatives, and the governor can serve two terms. Because the length of terms differs, this adds up to four years for representatives and eight for the governor or senators. Michigan's Senators in the United State Senate serve a term of six years. They may be re-elected for as many additional terms as the voters allow. There have been some attempts to limit the terms of US Senators by State law, but since the US Constitution overrides the state laws for federal elections, this wouldn't stand up.
The president can serve up to eight years, which is two terms. A term is four years. A limit has been set, so our government will not become a dictatorship.

can serve up to 8 years. they serve one term for four years and then there is another election. if they are elected again, they are there for another four years. they can't serve more than 8 years, though.
Its 4 years for NY State (and 4 years for all US states except VT and NH, which are each 2 years) http://www.votesmart.org/pdf/govtable.pdf
