The applicant should have minimum 5 years of continuous residence as green card holder in US prior to applying for naturalization.This time period is reduced for spouses of US citizen to 3 years prior to submitting application for US citizenship. In case applicant is in army and in service outside US the continuous residence requirement is waved off.
