You can be an author today. Anyone can write something, but getting it published is another thing. The important thing with writing is that you develop your style and type of writing. Read as much as you can, learn, expose yourself to different cultures and types of people, write ideas in your computer or smartphone. Sometimes these thoughts filter through and unless you write them down they are gone. Learn, learn, learn , know the classic novel style, read the classics, understand history and time/setting. Do your research when you write and finally write, write, write. The more you write the better you will get.
