no college is required. You would attend a culinary academy which provides many different certifications. This process could take you any where from a year to 10 years depending on how many foods you want to cook!
There are many 2 year programs where you can get an Associates Degree in Applied Science - Culinary Arts. There are also some 4 year programs where you can either learn a specific aspect of being a chef, like baking, or you can attach a restaurant management degree in that 4 years. I myself did the 2 year program and after being a chef for over 10 years, the best answer I can tell you is you never stop learning, there is no school that will teach you everything you will ever need to know about cooking. So if you are thinking about becoming a chef, be ready to become a life long student and contently be ready to learn.
