Sunspots are not permanent features on the sun but rather areas of dark on the surface due to magnetic activity.

The sun goes through phases of solar maximum where sunspot activity is higher to solar minimum where there are less sun spots. It is not uncommon to see 200+ sunspots a year at solar maximum.

Solar maxima occurs every 11-12 years. The last one in 2001 and the next estimated in 2013.

Interestingly scientist believe that the level of solar activity is greater now than at any time for the last 1000 years.
