Methane, a greenhouse gas twenty times more dangerous than carbon dioxide, enters the atmosphere by way of:

  • cattle belching
  • poor agricultural practices on pig and cattle farms dealing with manure
  • rice paddy farming
  • from organic matter decomposing anaerobically behind hydro-electric dams
  • from thawing tundra and lakes

There are many natural sources of methane and some man made. The man made sources include the drilling for, recovery of, processing of and use of fossil fuels.

The natural sources include:

  • anaerobic decomposition of organic matter
  • digestive gases from ruminant animals (cows etc.)
  • termites
  • losses from oil and gas strata
  • melting of permafrost
  • releases from seabed hydrates

Methane is a powerful greenhouse gas, twenty-one times stronger than carbon dioxide. It is being released into the atmosphere from:

  • Oil and gas extraction and refining
  • Coal mining
  • Livestock and Manure
  • Rice Farming Practices
  • Landfills
  • Wastewater and other waste

As the earth warms, methane is beginning to escape from melting tundra and frozen lakes. This is a positive feedback, for the escaping methane will speed up global warming causing quicker melting. More global warming!

Will methane gas rise when released in the air?

Methane gas settles down because methane gas is heavier than and is carried by the upward displacement of air. ---------------------------------------------- The density of methane is 0,717 g/L and the density of air is 1,2 g/L at 0 0C; consequently methane gas raise in the air.

Is methane lighter than air?

Yes methane is lighter than air because it is less dense than air.

Methane is colorlessodorless gas. It oxidizes in air and has a boiling point of -161C. Which property of methane is a chemical property?

The fact that it oxidizes in air is a chemical property of methane.

Why do people breathe oxygen instead of methane?

The main reason is that oxygen is abundant in the atmosphere but methane is not. Air is 21% oxygen but only 0.00018% methane, so there is not enough methane in air to be of any use.
