Aluminium carbide (Al4C3), is quite alkaline compound and reacts with water to produce methane. This is the equation for this reaction :

Al4C3 + 12 H2O ----> 4 Al(OH)3 + 3CH4

for this reason this chemical is also called Aluminium methanide.

Methane can be generated from aluminum carbide by reacting it with water in a process called hydrolysis. The reaction produces methane gas and aluminum hydroxide as byproducts. This reaction is commonly used in the laboratory to produce small amounts of methane for experimental purposes.
