The people who were serfs were uneducated, couldn't read or write, lived in hovels made of sticks and mud. They barely had enough food and when a war was fought they were the army. The men who were the lords didn't sit around saying, " boy isn't feudalism great." They owed their positions to someone up the chain of command. The king, the church. Life was hard, but easier on the men who ran the show.
