When the wilderness is broken up into fenced fields the fences keep animals form migrating across it, displace the natural animals with farm animals and stop the wolves hunting their natural prey.
They will therefore turn to eating the farmers animals and the farmer will shoot them to stop this predation. Wilderness should be preserved and mankind should be kept form encroaching onto more of it. There are too many people and too few wild animals/areas.
