if this is the one in your car the rotor has slip rings where you can put 12v dc

which will give over 100v with no load

old cars have external regulator 3-4 wires

new ones have one wire all circuits in one little lump of epoxy

the stator is 3 phase

delta or Y - 6 or 3 diodes

the rotor a 12 v DC magnet with slip rings

the diodes sometimes fail

the brushes are only good for about 10 years

usually to trouble shoot just start the car and see if the battery voltage increases.

Can you use the separately excited shunt generator machine as self excited generator?

You have a seperately excited generator and then you have a shunt generator which has the field winding in parallel with the armature terminals. In DC machines a separately excited generator could be run as a shunt generator provided the field winding is designed to work on the generated voltage. A separately excited alternator needs a DC supply for the field winding. In car alternators that is taken from the main winding via a rectifier and a voltage regulator.

What is a exciter generator?

its creates the magnetic field trough the electricity, which we called exciter for it.we send some electric shocks to the field coils, then it will magnetized the stater of the generator. When Diesel or petrol engine rotates the rotter of the generator, EXCITED stater act as a magnet. Depend on alternator`s design, rotter or stater one always EXITED to be a magnet. When engine turns the Alternator against the magnetic field, electricity is produced.

What Generator has shunt windings and series windings?

A 'compund wound' dc generator has shunt winding and a series winding. The shunt winding has a high resistance, and draws only a small current from the armature, but as it has many turns of wire on it, it generates a strong magnetic field. The series winding has only a few turns of wire on it, and, even though it has a large current in it, its magnetic field is usually less than that of the shunt field. Because of this, the compound generator behaves in most ways like a shunt generator, and is controlled in the same way. As it is self-excited, the compound wound generator requires 'residual flux' to start the generating process. The series winding, if connected to AID the shunt field, can boost the field flux as load comes onto the machine and correct for the normal 'droop' in output voltage as the load increases. If set up properly, this correction makes the generator self-regulating. Because the fields aid each-other, this connection is called 'cumulative compounded'. This type of machine is the workhorse of the larger generator market. If the series field winding is connected so it's field OPPOSES the shunt field, then the output voltage of the generator collapses as the machine is loaded up. This connection is referred to as 'differential compounded', and is only used for arc welding generators - they have a high voltage before the arc is struck; a fairly low voltage during welding operations, and if the rod sticks to the work, they shut the generator down without damaging it.

What should be the speed to produce 230v ac power?

The frequency in Hz is governed by the speed of a generator. The voltage is governed by the winding and types of connections of these windings.

Why a given generator frequency is dictated by the size of the magnetic flux?

A generator's frequency is dictated by the power system frequency, and the number of poles in the generator. For 60 Hz power and a generator designed with two poles, the generator must turn at 3600RMPs (60 Hz * 60 seconds / minute). The magnetic flux is what induces the current in on the output winding. Spinning a synchronous generator faster or slower is not done to control the magnetic flux. The field winding voltage is varied to control this, and in turn control the output of the generator.

What is the excitation of the generator?

The rotor must have a magnetic field in order to generator voltage in stator winding. The exciter circuit generates this DC filed in the rotor.

How wartsila abb amg 1600 produce electrical energyand the generator operate?

the prime mover rotates the rotor of the alternator. the exciter contains stator coils with remanence induces voltage in the rotating windings of the exciter rotor which is then rectified and goes through the main field winding. the rotating rotor flux cuts through the stator windings inducing voltage on them. the AVR controls the field current to the exciter stator coils. DC current for pole formation.

What is AVR generator?

AVR stands for Automatic Voltage Regulator for generator. Most AVR work by automatically comparing the sensed voltage with the reference setting generator output voltage then diverting the input current to the exciter circuit. Some AVR circuit are configured in parallel connection with the exciter stator winding, When it sense below rated set voltage, more current is feed to the exciter to catch up the voltage difference until it would reach equilibrium again, when it is within rated voltage less current is feed to the exciter or more current is diverted to the AVR circuit. Some AVR has manual remote voltage trim or control to manually raise or lower the set voltage. The AVR works also during parallel operation by regulating voltage and controlling load Ampere (load sharing capability), the power factor (PF) and VAR (Volt-Amps Reactive).

Do generators have brushes?

Most do, but not all. Some have a separate exciter winding.

What is field winding?

The field winding on a generator is the winding that is electrified to create an electromagnet; it is generally the winding found on the rotor (the rotating part of the generator).

How is the synchronous motor made self starting?

The synchronous motor is made self starting by providing a special winding on the rotor poles, known as damper winding or squirrel cage winding. AC supply given to the stator produces a rotating magnetic field which causes the rotor to rotate, therefore, in the beginning synchronous motor provided with damper winding starts as a squirrel cage induction motor. The exciter moves along the rotor. When the motor attains about 95%of synchronous speed, the rotor winding is connected to exciter terminals and the rotor is magnetically locked by the rotating field of the stator and the motor runs as a synchronous motor. While starting a synchronous motor, the field winding must be shorted through a suitable resistance so that the induced voltage is distributed throughout the whole winding and no part is subjected to the high voltage induced in the entire winding.
