The current limit is set by how hot the wire is allowed to run, but a 55 amp maximum would give a 60 degree C temperature rise for 8 AWG wire with a diameter of 3.26 mm.

For continuous use the current limit is half that because there is a balance between the cost of the wire and the cost of energy wasted as heat from the wire. If a wire runs continuously hot it is economic to use a thicker wire that wastes less energy.
