How much before one can cancel railway ticket?

Indian Railways allows for the tickets to be cancelled even after the actual departure of the train from the station. However the slabs of refund vary according to time.

Details:

Mandatory Cancellation Charges:

1 a/c: Rs. 70/-

2 or 3 a/c, 1st class or a/c chair car: Rs. 60/-

Sleeper: Rs. 40/-

General Class: Rs. 20/-

Cancellation Penalty

1. 24hrs before the "Scheduled" departure of the train: No Penalty

2. Between 4 to 24 hrs before the Scheduled departure of the train: 25% of the total fare

3. Less than 4 hours before the scheduled, or after the "actual" departure of the train: 50% of the total fare

however, for the last slab, cancellations are only permitted till

3 hrs after departure: when the train journey is less than 200 kms

6 hrs after departure: when the train journey is 200 - 500 kms

12 hrs after departure: when the train journey is 500 + kms
