A human body contains about about 5 liters of blood (a little more than one gallon). The heart will continuously pump this amount of blood throughout the cardiovascular system (throughout the body) and through each side of the heart one time each minute. Of course, the amount of blood actually held within the heart at any given moment varies on the person (do they have a healthy or defective heart?) and the size of their heart (baby versus adult), and other factors.

Based on a heart rate of 75 beats a minute and a stroke volume (amount/volume of blood pumped out by one ventricle with each heart beat) of 70 ml. per beat, the average adult cardiac output (amount of blood pumped out by each ventricle in 1 minute) is 5.25 liters per minute.

A healthy adult heart is usually just slightly larger than the size of the person's clenched fist and weighs between 7 to 15 ounces.

There are four chambers in the heart that can hold blood. There are two atria and two ventricles. The atria receive blood and the ventricles pump it out of the heart. The atria are smaller than the ventricles, and don't really hold blood stored in them, since the atria are allowing blood to flow into the ventricles at the same time as blood is entering the heart by way of the atrial chambers.

At the end of the cycle of the atria filling the ventricles, the atria pump and create pressure in the ventricles to stretch them to hold the full load. That process also causes the valves to close between the atria and ventricles, so blood does not go backwards into the atria. The ventricles are each at that time holding a full load of blood under pressure.

So, when the ventricles are both full of blood (under pressure), the healthy heart is holding the maximum volume of blood. The typical healthy ventricle can hold approximately 120ml of blood at the end of that filling period. Therefore, the maximum blood in the heart at the peak of its volume is 240ml. The heart is never completely empty of blood. After the ventricles push the blood on its way from the heart, some blood stays behind in the ventricles. This is the time of the lowest volume of blood in the ventricles during any point in the cardiac cycle. They each will still have approximately 50ml, making the minimum volume of blood in the heart approximately 100ml. Additional notes about the circulatory system: The healthy adult heart pumps about 5 quarts of blood every minute, or 1,800 gallons of blood every day.

It takes about ten capillaries to equal the thickness of a human hair. The blood in our bodies travels a total of 12,000 miles in just a day. That is as far as going from coast to coast in the US four times.
