Arteries, veins and capillaries are the three major types of blood vessels. Capillaries are very small and only one cell thick to allow O2/CO2 exchange. Nutrients and wastes are also exchanged.

Nutrients and wastes are also exchanged. Large arteries have smooth muscle in their walls. Veins have much less muscle and capillaries have none. The job of the arteries and veins is to get the blood to and from the capillaries.
