Unless your 4 year old is considerably overweight, you should not be putting a calorie restriction on them at that age. If your child is very overweight then you should consult your pediatrician to formulate a diet for the child.

Children's bodies are not miniature version of adult bodies and need different requirements. At that age, the myelination of their nervous system is not complete, and the main ingredient in making myelin is fat. If they are put on a calorie restricted diet from too young of an age it can cause serious developmental problems.

Unless the child is obese he/she shouldn't diet. At 8 years old they need good food to help the body to develop and grow. They should be eating fresh fruit, veggies, and drinking milk instead of soft drinks. Too many children are living off of McDonald's meals, drinking soft drinks and eating snack foods all day. These things are too high in sugar and salt. An 8 year old also needs to go outside and play, swim, ride a bike or play Baseball. With these things they should not have a weight problem.
