the German mark original containd 24 carats of gold, but as they started to use less and less gold and more and more other metals, the law forced them to make the weight of the gold within the coin known and stamped on the coin, thus, if a German mark was only half gold, it would be marked, 12k, this eventualy caught on and the original meaning of the carat as a measure of weight was forgotten as far as gold goes(not diamonds)and was for evermore known to represent the purity of the gold, and not the weight of the pure gold contained theirin as it did for the German mark.your answer here...
