You are permitted to carry a maximum of $5,000 US Dollars through customs at any airport within China. Monetary amounts over that need documentation and to be declaration at that airport's customs office.

Any amount, but you have to declare it, if it is over JPY1,000,000 in any currency. Declaring it does not mean you pay any taxes or duties, just that they may ask why are you carrying so much cash.
