In a study carried out by Maud Pember Reeves and other members of the Fabian Women's Group, of working class people in Lambeth, London between 1909 and 1913, the average wage of 'respectable, young men, in full work, at a more or less top wage' was found to be around a pound a week, that is 20 shillings. The sort of jobs they did included:
bus conductor; fish fryer; horse keeper; plumber's labourer; postal-van driver; potter's labourer; railway carriage washer; scene shifter.
A dustman earned 25/0, whilst a policeman earned 27/0.
All this information was taken from the book, "Round about a Pound a Week" by Maud Pember Reeves, published by Virago.
