The biggest dam in South Africa is the Gariep Dam, previously known as the Hendrik Verwoerd Dam. When full, it contains nearly 6000 million cubic metres of water spread over more than 370 square kilometres. The dam was completed in 1971.
The construction of the Colebrook River Dam began in May 1965. Construction on the dam was finished in June 1969. It cost a total of $14.3 million dollars to complete.
