The computer won't work properly if you do. The engine would be the simple/inexpensive part. The computer and rewiring would be cost prohibitive.

I had to have the water pump replaced on my 1999 Pontiac Grand Am. The engine is a 2.4L. They had to remove the timing belt etc. to get to it -- the pump is inside the block somehow. It cost me well over $700 and took a week.However, the mechanic said the 2.4L is more complicated so it really depends on your engine. I'm learning to hate the Grand Am as it's cost me a fortune to repair over the last 18 months.
