Aldi workers make $10 an hour but it's not just check out. If you work there you work EVERY aspect of the store. Sometimes you are at checkout, sometimes you are stocking and/or pulling the store, sometimes you are cleaning, and more times than none you are doing all this in the same shift by yourself. They work every dime out of you... that is why they can afford the high pay because most all stores run on a skeleton crew. It's a high stress job. Believe me. It's not just sitting on your butt all day scanning items and throwing them in a cart. Keep that in mind when you apply.
Yes, start at $10. per hour, however the store I worked at did has not given a pay raise in 5 years. The excuse is that THEIR cost of living studies show there has NOT been an increase, meanwhile every Saturday night there are pages of price increases. If you are hurt on the job, DO NOT think that you will be covered by workman's comp. Four of us hurt at work; 2 need surgery, 1 needs a front tooth, broken out by faulty equipment, replaced, I have had 2 surgery's and need another that 4 surgeons give me a 40% chance of living through, and a 60% chance of becoming paralyzed from the neck down after the operation. No payment just red tape, and they refuse treatment the doctors want. The level of productivity required often has employees working through their breaks and lunch, but the company gives out free timers so the employees can punch back in on time. I do miss the job because I enjoyed the hard psychical work. I'm just regretting that my life is now restricted mostly to my bed.

Self checkout has many advantages. First of all, in some supermarkets, most people go to the normal checkout so self checkout may be faster. It is also more "interactive" and fun to do. Of course, if you have alot of items, it can be much faster to go to a normal checkout. If you go to a normal checkout, the people who work there would also scan your goods faster than you can. I personally use selfcheckout except when i have alot of items.
