As much food as you put out!

Seriously, many things determine how much food your bird will eat:

Food Type - pellets vs. seed vs. natural fruits/vegetables/grains

Bird Breed/Weight

Living Environment - Stressful vs. calm

The best way I discovered is simply by trial and error. Start by putting small amounts of each type of food listed above in your bird's eating area. Personally I leave a bowl of pellets out 24/7. (Note - there are several variations of pellets available - plain to fruity to spicy - it was by trial/error that I discovered my guys like the spicy pellets the best.)

I put a 'sampling' of whatever fruits/vegetables I have on hand each morning. And usually by evening when I return from work - all is eaten.

And if you want to see a 'visual' as to how your bird's eating is going, keep track of their 'pooh'. Loose, medium to light green, mixed in with some threads of white color is a good sign that all is well in your bird's digestive system. And the volume of 'pooh' deposited by the end of each day vs. the volume left overnight will let you know if you are over or under feeding.

Some of the small to medium parrots (like Quaker Parrots) and other breeds that are 'hyper' (Cocketiels, some conures & Finches come to mind) - they will truly eat whatever you put in front of them and they love to chew on paper and 'roam'.

The larger breeds like Amazon's, McCaws, African Greys, Cockatoos, etc. They like fresh fruits/vegetables/nuts as meals & treats. Don't let them 'play' you into feeding them nuts all the time. I give about 6 peanut halves and 6 pistachio nuts to my Blue Front Amazon and he likes to drink my Spirilina mixed with Apple juice in the mornings and all of the 'twitter critters' enjoy a small bowl of my breakfast oatmeal I eat every morning.

And when I have rice or pasta left over from a meal - they benefit from that too.

It sounds like a lot, but it just takes a couple of weeks of really paying attention to their actions.

Also might want to get a postal scale ($5 in a dollar store) and weigh you bird for a at the beginning and end of each day for a week to determine it's average body weight. My hyper birds tend to 'pooh' twice as much as my Amazon, so I have to be careful about giving him availability to the fattening foods because he can put on an extra pound just as quickly as you & I!

The Finches on the other hand - I estimate that they eat at least 4 times their weight in food. I have noticed though that if I stick to a 95% pellet diet and give them seed only one night a week, they 'pooh' does not smell as bad. I occasionally grind up some peanuts in with grinded 'leftover' pellets that the other birds don't eat & have been out in bowls for a couple of days. Great way to 'recycle' food and the Finches love it.

And as a last resort - if you have run out of 'bird food' it won't hurt to share your regular 'human' meal with it on occasion. For example my Quaker likes the sauce filled crust on a Pizza. My Amazon likes the peperoni toppings and crust. They both adore a small amount of vanilla ice cream and a bite out any Subway sandwich I may bring home.

Good Luck & have fun watching!

Just do not feed them products with chocolate, onions, or guacamole in it. If they get a little by accident - just be sure to follow it up with squirting some water down their gullet to help it wash through faster in order to reduce absorption

Make sure you have a tube/bowl associated with drinking water and a separate bowl for them to do their 'bird baths' (they all like a good mist shower at least once a week)

It is best to just leave a bowl of food in there for them they eat different amounts depending on the time of year or climate. But make sure you use a bird/food safe container. I had three parakeets they die because of a raccoon got them. :( Hope this helps!

A parakeet will eat on and off all day. It is recommended to always keep their food bowl full so that they can eat when they want to.

Parrots can eat as much as they are willing to take. Just fill their food bowl up at least once a day to know they are eating enough.
