In the state of California, all children under 6 years old and under 60 pounds must ride in the back. Only if the rear seats are occupied by other young children, there are no rear seats, or in case of a medical condition can an exception be made to this law.

Recent child safety research has deduced that until the child is 4 foot 9 inches, they should ride in a booster seat whether in the front seat or back seat. For safety's sake, you should wait till the child is 12 years old before allowing them to sit up front.
