Pure gold is too soft to make into jewelry, coins, etc. so it is mixed with other metals to make it harder. The more of the other metals the less actual gold is in the item. Thus 18 K has more gold in it than 14 K or 10 K does. You just have to figure how much gold is in it. There may also be some cost involved in separating the gold from the other metals mixed in with it, therefore you probably won't be able to sell it for the pure value of the gold in the item.
