Chihuahuas can be adopted at shelters for a small fee or you can buy them for over $500 dollars at pet stores.

I got my female for 90. It depends on size and color. So anywhere between 300-1000.

You might be able to find a chihauhau at your local animal shelters -- in which case, you can get the dog for free, or for a small fee (like $30) that just helps the shelter cover their costs.

Contrary to popular belief, not all shelter animals are strays that were born in the streets. Plenty of purebred cats and dogs wind up in shelters. And if you adopt from a shelter, you will be saving a life.

most shelters are around 100- 200.

It depends on where you live and the vets office. There are many low cost and free clinics that can neuter a chihuahua for you. They do great work too. You can search online for low cost clinics or you can email me with your city and state and I will be happy to help you find one. Chihuawa10@msn.com Serena Chihuahua Rescue www.crar.org

It depends on the shot and the area. Vets in larger cities have much higher fees than small-town vets. I can tell you average rural vet fees, but it may be doubled in a large city.

Regular yearly vaccinations are rabies and 7-in-1; they run $15-$20 each. You can buy the vaccinations and give the injection yourself, and that is OK for the 7-in-1, but save the stickers from the vials so the vet can record them. Rabies is available and can be administered by the owner, but rabies vaccinations are not legally valid unless they are given by a licensed veterinarian (or in some clinics, a technician). There are some vets, especially in rural areas, that will come to your home and give vaccinations if you have several dogs. Mine does, but I have 10 dogs. If a vet gives the shot in your home it is still legally valid. If you give it yourself and your dog bites someone, they will have to go through the same processes as an unvaccinated animal, up to and including euthanasia, depending on area laws. Also, when a vet administers rabies vacs, your dog is given a tag with an ID # and contact information for your vet. If someone finds a dog with a tag, they can call the clinic and give the ID # and the clinic will contact you.

Bordetella shots are usually optional, but they are usually required when an animal is boarded or inpatient. Otherwise, they are not really necessary, but they are recommended if you foster rescue animals or have numerous pets. Bordetella generally spreads in close quarters like kennels and shelters, but it is not unheard of in private homes without kennels. It can also be administered as a nasal spray, but it is harder to give intranasally; it is not easy to hold most animals still and squirt something up their nose.

There is also an injectable heartworm preventive; it lasts 6 months and costs about the same as a 6 month supply of oral preventatives.

ID microchips are given by injection; they are $40-$50. If the vet charges more than $50, go to another vet. Sometimes local shelters or rescues offer chips at a steep discount, but that is possible because nonprofit organizations get the chips for far less than a clinic can.

Immiticide shots to clear up a heartworm infestation are very expensive; rural areas it can be $400 but vets in large cities may charge up to $1000. However, the Immiticide supply is depleted; it is indefinitely unavailable to anyone.

The cost for routine vaccinations for all dogs is generally the same, since vaccines are measured out on a "per dog" dose rather than a "per pound" dose. A rabies vaccine will typically run you between $15 and $30 depending upon length of effectiveness and geographic area; a distemper-parvo combo vaccine will typically be between $20 and $40. Other vaccines may be required or strongly suggested depending upon where you live at.
