Quite a bit. There is lots of work involved with a compressor changeout. Ex. The refrigerant needs to be removed. Then the compressor needs to be changed. Chances are there is acid in the lines so that needs to be taken care of. After the compressor is in place, the unit has to be nitrogen charged to check for leaks. Following that the system needs to be pulled down into a vacuum. Then refrigerant needs to be added. Chances are this unit uses R-22 so that alone will be costly. If you are looking to get this done for cheap and you actually find a hack that will do so, prepare for major problems down the line. And then have fun finding the hack to fix it again.
No, not by the average home mechanic. Bad compressor? Replace the entire unit.
what causes compressor lockout in voager rooftop unit.
No the compressors in residential condensing units are called hermetic compressors and have to be rebuilt by cutting open the compressor shell, then rebuild the compressor and then weld the shell shut. Buy a new compressor or condensing unit.

To purchase a home AC you buy the unit and that includes installation. Depending on the unit it will cost from 8,000 and up. I just recently put a new one on the house and the entire cost was 12,000, but I also replaced the ducts.
In most residential systems, the home thermostat is connected to the interior air handler unit which is then connected to the exterior compressor. It is common to see control wiring from the compressor unit following a freon tube to the interior unit.
Depends on location and on what brand of unit you have. Also depends if the unit lost its freon during its failure. Cost with out freon is 1300-1600 with freon R-22 now that is has doubled in price would be 1700-2300.
Yes your compressor comes when you set your thermostat to "Fan" setting and you have it on cool setting.
Unit cost is how much is costs to make. Unit price is how much you sell it for. The difference is profit.

The cost of an AC compressor depends on the size of the unit, where you live, and who is going to install it. In general, a 2.5 ton compressor will cost between $1000 and $1800 depending on the manufacturer and installer. One user said: You can find a 5 ton compressor for under $1000 online. If it's for a car, 200.00 & up/re manufactured.
