The phrase "prop plane" could refer to any of a couple thousand aircraft, anywhere from little homebuilt jobs which can be purchased for less than $10,000 (some assembly required) to your average lil Cessna 4-seaters (20 to 50k) or even a classic WW2 era bomber (priceless)... So its a difficult question to answer fully.

I am going to assume you mean a single-engine private plane.

If you arent too particular about looks or speed, you can get a cessna 150 or 152 for as low as $10k.... However if you want something safe and reliable $20k is probably more realistic.

If you want something useful (the 150s/152s dont have much carrying capacity) youll need something along the lines of a 172 or piper arrow, count on spending between $40k and $50k

Mind you, this is all used, if you wanted a new 172, count on over $100k easily.

The 172 is kinda small, about the size of your average 4-door car, you can go to a 210, just a bit bigger & spend around $170k to $200k

If you want something nice, the Piper Malibu is a popular little bird for around $500k. A lot of them have oxygen systems, pressurized cabins & all that fun stuff.

Right now the Cirrus SR-22 is a real popular plane, all composite construction, theyre sleek & fast & they have a handy built-in parachute that may just save your life... They go used for around $350k

If you want a flying rolls-royce, a new Beechcraft Bonanza goes for around $700k

Airplanes are horribly expensive to buy and even more painfully expensive to maintain, for this reason many airplanes are owned by multiple people. It is not uncommon for two or three or even a whole club of people to own partial shares of one aircraft. If you are a new pilot, you are much better off buying into one of these clubs or renting than you are trying to go it alone.
