A "relator" in a legal action is one that has had their case taken up by a governmental agency or other form of public entity that would have the authority to act on behalf of the relator or relators as the case may be.

A good example would be as in the case of the people v Ely Lilly. In this case multiple complaints were lodged against the company for wrongfully promoting a drug to doctors and other medical professionals so that it was used incorrectly. The relators began their cases separatly and when the governmental agencies (health and human services for example) that had also been sold the drug under the same useage conditions found out about it, they then championed the cases of the origonal plaintiffs. Quite often these cases are refered to as class action suits.

As for how much a relator is paid this depends on the individual cases, and the monitairy judgments as set forth by the courts or in a barganing agreement entered into by the plaintiffs and the defendants.

Hope this helps.

Best, L.J.S.
