a Marine would need to be in the service for a lot longer than a year to pick up sergeant.
The military is downsizing quite a bit and are recruiting less and less people. It's due to the economy. You should try again though, never give up your dreams.
Army by far. Marines are real men.
"Jarhead" and "Gyrine" are less than favorite nicknames for marines.
Less than 2% of the Americans are in US Marines. Once a Marine always a Marine.
If you are doing SSD, it is the Marines, under the D of Navy.
be less available for service
There is no good answer to this question. A detachment is simply a portion of a unit. It can also be called a party or working party although the word "party" suggests smaller groups usually less than 30. A detachment can range anywhere between 2 or 200 or 2000. It all depends on what task they are accomplishing, how many Marines are available, and how many Marines are needed.
* Base pay for an E-3 is roughly $1500 a month
Unless requested otherwise, I always addressed retired personnel by their rank, in this case Master Gunnery Sergeant, in a less formal situation "Top" would be acceptable as well.
Well, an E-1 which is lowest gets payed 1400 or so in a month if you worked 1 year or less.
Depending on the individuals MOS (job), necessity for promotion based on the needs of the Army, their personal achievement's, prior positions held and their records it can take anywhere from 15-20 years. Typically promotion to E-9 Sergeant Major is between 14-18 years of service. The higher in rank you go the more competitive it gets because you are competing against thousands of other soldiers for less than 50 E-9 Sergeant Major slots for that year. The number of slots is based on the needs of the Army for that year.
