Indian head cents were struck in two different alloys:

> From 1859 to mid-1864 they were made of an alloy of 88% copper and 12% nickel, with a weight of 4.67 gm.

> From mid-1864 to the end of the series in 1909 they were made of the familiar bronze alloy of 95% copper, 5% tin and/or zinc that was used until mid-1982 (excepting 1943, of course) when the current copper-plated zinc composition was adopted.
